詳細情報
概要
Scholars criticize such works as “Twilight,” “The DaVinci Code,” “The Notebook” and others as low-grade fiction. Yet, these same books are also immensely popular with the reading public. This class will thus attempt to define “quality” in literature, while reading popular short stories by such writers as O. Henry, Frank Stockton, Richard Connell and more. An important course aspect will be student presentations on various topics related to evaluating literature.
目標
Students will display the Academic English skills they have developed in previous courses, in areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will explore the differences between popular and classic literature and, according to their study, attempt to define what is "good" literature.
授業外の学習
Students must prepare one presentation from a list of topics presented by the instructor. Presentation time will be approximately 20 minutes, with the student serving as the instructor during that time. Preparation time will vary according to the student, but students should prepare well so as to foster discussion within the class. Students must read several short stories in preparation for in class discussion. Students must also take short multiple choice Moodle quizzes on each story. Stories will vary in length but most will be under ten pages. English copies of each story will be provided on Moodle. Each quiz will be five questions long and last five minutes or less. The number of stories may be added to or reduced according to the number of class participants and available time. Students must submit three short reaction papers in regards to stories assigned by the instructor. This schedule will be presented on the first day or class and adjusted as needed. Students must read the stories, write their personal reactions and post their reactions on Moodle. They must also review feedback to their reactions sent by the instructor. Reading and writing time will vary according to the student. Each student is to write 600 words for credit on each assignment. Posting deadlines may change according to the class pace. Students must prepare a final essay that addresses how they personally evaluate quality in literature. Students are expected to back-up their opinions with research. The paper will have a word length of 2000 word and be due approximately one week after the final class. Preparation time will vary according to each student.
所要時間: 190 minutes. This will vary per week.
