概要

In this course, we will read three short novels that, together, comprise "The New York Trilogy." As we read, we will carefully consider themes that tie the three pieces together, and we will not only improve our English-language reading skills, but also our ability to analyze and express our ideas about a challenging literary work. In addition, students will write two academic-style papers with citations on aspects of the text.

目標

The objectives for this course are as follows: *To read and discuss a novel by a contemporary American author, written in a “Postmodern” style that may not be very familiar to students, and to acquire the necessary skills to dissect it and extract its deeper meaning/messages *To sharpen our interpretive skills via such a process *To improve our English reading and comprehension skills, as well as our presentation skills in English *To engage in meaningful and interesting discussions in English *To write essays using citations in the proper fashion

授業外の学習

Students are expected to do all assigned readings before the due date (i.e. the following week’s class) and to be prepared both to listen to mini-lectures from the professor and to pose questions/discuss the readings with fellow students and as a class. Further, essays (papers) will be required, and so students are expected to spend time outside of class both researching and writing such papers for credit.
