概要
The Life and Writings of Miyamoto Musashi is a course of study that aims to explore in-depth Musashi’s writings, specifically, The Book of Five Rings. The course will enable students to examine various English translations of Musashi’s writings and compare these different interpretations. Students will explore Musashi’s life stories and map out his life events. In reading and in exploring Miyamoto Musashi’s works, students will be guided to develop skills in comparing and appreciating translated English texts. Students will be guided to explore important aspects of Japanese history in English, and conduct research into Miyamoto Musashi’s life. The course aims to facilitate the development of students’ active reading skills, active listening skills, English comprehension skills and oral communication skills. Students will be encouraged to express their creativity and to voice their ideas and opinions in group work during class time.
目標
The four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking will be accentuated throughout the course. The course will emphasize active, critical reading with a focus not only on what we read, but how we read. Students will be encouraged to seek different meaning of what they read by being guided to ask different questions to attain fresh understanding and read in a new light. Students will practice and demonstrate their communicative and analytical skills through large and small group discussion, oral presentations, class leadership. Collaborative learning will be the guiding approach of the course and will inform the classroom process: Dialogue and experiential learning that arises between teacher and students; between each student and their partners and small groups; and within the classroom community as a whole.
授業外の学習
Students will need to: 1- allocate time to reading the main text The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi. 2 - dedicate time to complete assigned readings every week and be prepared to discuss the themes of these readings in the following lessons. 3 - complete worksheets related to their readings. 4 - conduct research about one aspect relating Miyamoto Musashi’s life, artwork or writings; and write a 1000-word paper on this topic. 4 - prepare an oral presentation to be given in front of the class about their chosen topic relating to Miyamoto Musashi.
所要時間: It is envisaged that students will devote at least 120 minutes (2 hours) every week to outside classwork for this course.

- Week 5: Miyamoto Musashi’s Years in the Land of Fire and Final Resting Place
- Week 6: Exploring Miyamoto Musashi’s Works (Writings; Art; Metal work), focusing on the Five Scrolls: The Book of Five Rings
- Week 7: Digging into the First Scroll: Earth. What is Earth?
- Week 8: Flying through the Second Scroll: Wind. What is the Element of Wind?
- Weeks 9: Diving into the Third Scroll: Water. What is the Element of Water?
- Week 10: Lighting Up the Fourth Scroll: Fire. What is Energy of Fire?
- Week 11: Floating into the Fifth Scroll: Emptiness. What is Emptiness?
- Week 12: Contemplating Musashi’s The Way of Walking Alone
- Week 13: Final Review. Rolling up the Scrolls and closing the Book of Five Rings
- Week 14: Project presentations. Final Wrap-up. Thank You.
教科書
Numerous English translations of 五輪の書 written by 宮本武蔵 (1643) Go Rin no Sho written by Miyamoto Musashi will be used in this course. Students are not expected to purchase their own textbooks for this course. Materials will be provided in class. A list of books is provided below, however, should students wish to purchase these texts for their own study. These books will be referred to in class.
