概要
Shirley Jackson is a major American feminist writer of the mid-20th century. Her gothic explorations of psychological trauma eventually led to the birth of the Shirley Jackson Award for writers of suspense and horror. In this class, students will examine Jackson’s major works, including her short novels, “The Haunting of Hill House” and “We Have Always Lived in the Castle,” plus her iconic short story, “The Lottery.” As Jackson is known for her Gothic mood, the class will be nicknamed “Halloween in Spring". Class assignments will aim at improving overall academic English skills through class discussion, one presentation and one research paper at the conclusion of the term.
目標
Students will continue to polish their Academic English abilities in all skill areas: speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing. Students will also learn the work of Shirley Jackson and her contributions to both feminist and gothic suspense literature.
授業外の学習
Students must study for several Moodle quizzes based on class content. One quiz will be on Shirley Jackson background information, provided in a lecture by the instructor. This quiz will have approximately 25 questions and take 15 minutes. There will be additional Moodle quizzes on each Shirley Jackson work discussed in class. These quizzes will vary in length from five to approximately ten questions and take about five minutes. All quizzes will be in Moodle multiple choice form. Preparation time will vary according to the student. Students should take good class notes and read well in order to achieve successful results. Students must read one Shirley Jackson short story and two novellas and be prepared for class discussion on those works. English copies of these works will be provided on Moodle. The short story will be only a few pages; the novellas are each over 100 pages. Students may acquire Japanese language copies on their own if they wish. Reading time will vary according to students, but the short story reads easily and the novella reading period will be generous, although students will need to address that reading faithfully. Students must make one presentation on a separate work of Shirley Jackson's short fiction. Students must choose their work of short fiction from a list provided by the instructor. All works will be provided on Moodle. The time for the presentation will be approximately ten minutes, but may be adjusted according to class size. Students are to explain the story to the class and analyze it in comparison with other Jackson works. Students must make one research paper at terms end. The paper must deal with some aspect of Shirley Jackson's various works of fiction. The paper is to be 2000 words or more. Required time to construct this paper will vary according to each student, but students should endeavor to conduct worthwhile research, write well, and check their own submissions carefully. This assignment will be due approximately one week after the final class session.
所要時間: 190 minutes. This will vary per week.
