概要

This course will be focused on literature of the fantastic or surreal, literature that takes us out of our everyday world and into a world of wonder. And yet, this world of wonder will lead us right back to the world of our everyday mundane lives via imagery and metaphor. Steven Millhauser has written both novels and short stories, and has won the Pulitzer Prize for his fiction, but he is not very well known in Japan. In this course, we will dip our feet into deep waters by reading a healthy selection of his shorter works collected in a volume entitled We Others. In addition to considering the way in which the fantastic is employed metaphorically, we will also consider the unique narrative techniques Millhauser employs throughout his work (such as the use of the plural “We,” as seen in the title of this collection), some themes that might be traced throughout certain stories in the collection, and we will also consider what makes his work “Postmodern.”

目標

The primary objective for this course will be to do close readings and analyses of Steven Millhauser’s short fictions, as collected in the volume We Others, considering, in addition to other things, their themes, metaphors employed, literary techniques, and Postmodernism.

授業外の学習

Outside of class, students are expected to keep up with the readings and, when requested, to participate in group discussions. Essays that must be written at home will also be required.
