概要

This student-centered class is all about language, specifically focusing on the social aspects of language learning and use. We will examine a range of theories related to sociolinguistics and discuss how language is used in society. As part of the course you will be required to written portfolio in English about aspects of language covered in the course. You will also multiple short research tasks and lead discussions as part of the output sessions, which count towards assessment.

目標

This subject aims to develop students’ English skills while also discovering about the way languages are learned and taught. We will examine various linguistic theories and gain a better understanding of the concepts that surround language acquisition. Classes will be arranged as either teacher-led input sessions or student-led output sessions in which the students manage the discussion and give interactive, informative presentations.

授業外の学習

Students will be expected to deepen their knowledge of their chosen topic in preparation for the essay and output-session. This will involve doing wider reading and research, as well as collaborating with group members. Reading is an important part of the course in preparing for the seminar classes.

  1. Introduction- Beginning Sociolinguistics: Defining the term. Examining important concepts within sociolinguistics.
  2. Student-led research tasks and interactive reading summaries. Examining important concepts within the field.
  3. Input -World English: Who owns English? What is ‘correct’ and ‘incorrect’ and who decides?
  4. Output - World English: Student Student-led research tasks and interactive discussions.
  5. Input -Genderlects: Does our gender alter how we speak? Can language be sexist?
  6. Output - Genderlects: Student-led research tasks and interactive discussions.
  7. Mid-Semester Review and Test
  8. Input - Pidgins and Creoles: Looking at new languages and how they form
  9. Output - Pidgin and Creole: Student-led research tasks and interactive discussions.
  10. Input -Linguistic Relativity: What is the relationship between language and worldview? Does our language shape our world view?
  11. Output – Linguistic Relativity: Student-led research tasks and interactive discussions.
  12. Input -Language and Power: Discussing the influence of language on power relations. How much does the way we speak effect our role in society? Politeness and Critical Discourse Analysis
  13. Output – Language and Power: Student-led research tasks and interactive discussions.
  14. Round Up and Finalising: A review of the concepts covered in class and preparation for the final assessments including Final Test and Writing Portfolio evaluation.
