概要

The so-called Roaring Twenties was a time of “flappers,” jazz and gangsters. In this course, students will apply historical study to examine the influences behind the American Literature produced in the 1920’s. Class texts will include shorter works by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Dorothy Parker. Various short media presentations will highlight the culture and lifestyle of the 1920s.

目標

This class is to help students continued improvement in academic English and covers all skill areas: speaking, listening, writing and reading, with a focus on historical critical analysis of American Literature of the 1920s. Class activities will involve brief lectures by the instructor and discussions based on class readings. There are both inside class and outside class components for writing. Each student will have to make a short presentation and a research paper. These assignments are to help students polish their skills in overall Academic English.

授業外の学習

Students must read several short stories. These stories will be posted on the class Moodle page. Each story should be read carefully in preparation for class discussion. Necessary reading time will depend on the student. Stories will vary in length, from a few pages to approximately ten. Students must write three informal reaction paperss to three different short stories. Student will choose the stories from selections provided on Moodle. Students must read their selected stories, write their personal reaction to each story and post their reactions on Moodle. They must also review feedback to their reactions sent by the instructor. Reading and writing time will vary according to the student. Each student is to write 600 words for credit on each assignment. Posting deadlines may change according to the class pace. Students must create and submit a research paper based on some aspect of American Literature in the 1920s. This is a major assignment involving library and online research. The paper is to be 2000 words or more. Required time to construct this paper will vary according to each student, but students should endeavor to conduct worthwhile research, write well, and check their own submissions carefully. This assignment will be due approximately one week after the final class session. Students must prepare one presentation. This is also a major assignment. Students must choose their topics from a list provided by the instructor. They must research their topics and present their findings in a PowerPoint. The time length for the presentation will depend on the number of enrolled students and available class time. Preparation for this presentation may vary according to each student, but each student must speak in English without memos. Therefore, careful preparation is needed. Students must prepare for several in-class Moodle quizzes. These quizzes will include 1. A quiz on 1920s author background from a presentation by the instructor. This quiz will be approximately 25 questions and ten minute long. 2. A quiz on the overall content of student presentations. Questions for this quiz will be provided by students. This quiz too will be approximately 25 questions and ten minutes long. 3. Three quizzes on the plot content of the three stories to be read and discussed in class. These quizzes will be approximately five questions and less than five minutes long. ALL quizzes will be in multiple choice Moodle format.
