概要

In this course we will read, discuss, and research Ben Aaronovitch's 'Rivers of London'. There will be spoken work in class, writing and research, and a final report.

目標

In this course we will read and study Ben Aaronovitch's 'Rivers of London'. The aim will be, in the course of reading the book, to research a variety of aspects of the book and to develop a variety of possible approaches to studying this text. The main aim will be to improve and deepen students' ability to discover and develop research aims and methods.

授業外の学習

Reading the text and other texts connected with this study. Some texts will be provided by the instructor, some will be sourced by the students. The course will require weekly writing on topics provided by the instructor.

  1. Introduction to the course. Researching and discussing background to Rivers of London. Please note that the sequence of contents of the syllabus may change slightly depending upon student responses and interests.
  2. Ch 1, Humour.
  3. Chapters 3 and 4. Race in fiction. Police procedural?
  4. Magic in fiction. The attraction of the antique. The contrast with the modern. Urban fantasy.
  5. Architecture. Any significance?
  6. Ch 6. The rivers and streams. Beverly Brook
  7. Old Man River.
  8. What is Mr Punch?
  9. The cost of magic? Relating to other texts.
  10. Gender? How important is it in fiction?
  11. Looking at London. In fiction. Alternative Londons, and the real. More on urban fantasy.
  12. Riots? What do they mean? Who does them? How are they different to demonstrations?
  13. Which war were you in? (Chapter 12)
  14. Rounding everything off. Discussing the whole book.
