概要

Similar to how a magic word might reveal a secret door, symbols can unlock hidden meanings in works of literature. Yet many readers struggle to see and understand symbols until someone explains. This course will endeavor to equip students with skills to discover such symbolism on their own. The course opens with a primer on basic symbols and closely related features such as archetypes, allegory, allusion and story patterns. After this, the class will observe how such features enhance the understanding of several well-known works of American Literature. This course strives to be a magic word to the world of literature!
