WRITING WORKSHOP 1

概要

Writing Workshop is designed to prepare students to produce university level written essays in English within the field of English and American Literature. Students will write a 1,000-word essay based on the prescribed reading from the course. The essay will be worked on as a project, with the essay plan and first draft also being assessed as part of the final mark. The coursework will provide the main focus of workshops within the class, and in this way the students will receive a lot of peer and tutor support as they prepare the essay. In this way, students will be encouraged to think for themselves while still being given all the necessary support for producing academic essays to a high standard.

By the end of the course, students will have: - been introduced to the use of computers as a way to develop their writing and research skills - been trained in the need to check for a range of systematic errors - practised writing grammatical sentences and experimented with some slightly more complex structures (e.g., passives and subordinate clauses) - worked on expressing their thoughts and ideas in clear, straightforward language - produced a substantial amount of freely-expressed English (e.g., a diary or journal) - studied paragraph structure and be able to construct a basic report with an introduction, a main body and a conclusion - learned that plagiarism, summarizing and translating from other sources are unacceptable - read and studied model papers - have done written work based on homework reading and/or research - have read and written about at least one work of literature in English (or a selection from a number of works of literature)

授業外の学習

You will be expected to read and/or write something each week. To study literature you really need to read the primary sources (poems, stories you are writing about) at least twice. You must also include other academic sources in your essays and coursework assignments. All essays and presentations must include a minimum of 3 academic references (cited in-text and included in the works cited section) and be MLA format. Wikipedia and other “untrustworthy” sources will not be accepted as citations.
