概要

In this class, we will read and analyze a selection of “classic” short stories written by American authors over the years. Authors covered will include such “literary giants” as Ernest Hemingway, Herman Melville, Henry James, Sherwood Anderson, and others. The goal is for us to familiarize ourself with the general landscape of "classic" American literary short texts, and to enjoy reading these works in their original language. Students will weekly read a selection of stories from the text, lead weekly discussions, and present on the authors (depending of the number of students, this may be assigned to more than one student per week). Students will also do in-depth analyses (essays) of one or more stories from the text, using citations.

目標

The objectives for this course are as follows: To read and analyze well-known short stories from the canon of 19th and 20th century American literature To improve our interpretative and analytical skills via studying these short texts To consider the milieu (time and place) in which these stories were written, and also to consider the struggles that the authors went through while writing them To improve our English reading and comprehension skills, as well as our presentation skills in English To engage in meaningful and interesting discussions in English To write essays using citations in the proper fashion

授業外の学習

Students are expected to do all assigned readings before the due date (i.e. the following week’s class) and to be prepared both to listen to mini-lectures from the professor and to pose questions/discuss the readings with fellow students and as a class. Further, essays (papers) will be required, and so students are expected to spend time outside of class both researching and writing such papers for credit.
