概要
Reading and Discussing Current Affairs with English Newspapers is a course of study that aims to familiarize students with reading English newspapers and becoming competent in analyzing current affairs. The course will guide to students to read English newspapers and to discuss current affairs. Students will learn to become familiar with printed and online English newspapers and gain skills in analyzing newspaper articles. The course aims to facilitate the development of students’ active reading skills, active listening skills, English comprehension skills and oral communication skills, with strong focus placed on discussion and presentation skills. Students will be encouraged to express their thoughts and opinions in group work during class time.
目標
The four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking will be accentuated throughout the course. The course will emphasize active, critical reading with a focus not only on what we read, but how we read. Students will practice and demonstrate their communicative and analytical skills through large and small group discussion, oral presentations, class leadership. Emphasis will be placed on developing English language skills through the reading, summarizing, analyzing and discussing current events as reported in printed and online newspapers.
授業外の学習
It is envisaged that students will dedicate time to reading at least one English newspaper article a week and prepare this reading for discussion before the lesson. Students will be guided to complete worksheets relating to their readings. Through these worksheets, students will be encouraged to attain broader and deeper understanding of the texts. Students will learn how to summarize newspaper reports and practice writing about current events. Students will choose one current affairs topic reported in English newspapers to make an oral presentation to the class. Students will also select one event currently happening on campus at Sophia University and write a newspaper article to submit and also make a presentation on this same subject as part of the course assessment.
所要時間: It is envisaged that students will devote at least 120 minutes (2 hours) every week to outside classwork for this course.

- Week 5: Analyzing online newspaper articles. Discussing topics in this week’s news.
- Week 6: Summarizing newspaper articles. Discussing topics in this week's news.
- Week 7: Summarizing newspaper articles. Discussing topics in today’s newspaper.
- Week 8: Discussing current affairs. Reporting on a current event.
- Weeks 9: Discussing current affairs. Researching and writing about a topic of interest.
- Week 10: Researching and writing about a topic of interest. Discussing topics in today’s newspaper.
- Week 11: Discussing current affairs. Presentation skills.
- Week 12: Discussing current affairs. Presentation skills.
- Week 13: Final Review. Rolling up the newspaper and logging off online news.
- Week 14: Final presentations. Wrap-up. Thank You.

There are no prescribed textbooks for this course. Students are not required to purchase textbooks. Printed newspaper articles will be provided for study in class.
