概要

This dualistic course is designed to provide an occasion for students to develop their discussion and debate skills in line with more tangible techniques associated with presentation delivery. Students are encouraged to apply critical thinking strategies to construct and to deconstruct arguments using examples to support and justify their opinions. They develop techniques and skills to enable them to process their ideas and to logically construct and successfully deliver presentations to audiences focusing on the following categories which relate to environmental and societal issues and the relationship to art and literature: 1. Object Presentations: New Inventions and Improved Products or Detrimental Designs 2. Process Presentations: Amazing Processes and Unacceptable Practices 3. Problem & Solution Presentations: Artists Tackling Global Issues, Identifying Causes, Taking Action and Evaluating Outcomes Students focus on research, structure, multimedia use, and delivery. Subject to approval, students choose their own topics for presentation - the only absolute stipulation is that all topics must have some connection to relevant global issues and specific reference must be made the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Depending on class sizes and dynamics during the semester there should be three formal multimedia assisted group presentations and many opportunities for less formal individual presentation

目標

Students focus on extracting specific information and details, as well as general meaning. Interpretation is addressed in order to help students distinguish and respond to a speaker's attitude, intent and opinion. This course is best suited for students who are comfortable taking instruction and participating in class in English, and who want to become more confident in their ability to communicate and openly share their opinions. They are introduced to public speaking and learn how to suitably address groups, use non-verbal communication, project the voice and logically structure presentations. At the end of the course, students should be able to give well structured, multimedia assisted presentations about meaningful issues in English. Additional Objectives are: • To practice & develop planning and oral skills to give prepared speeches. • To practice & develop individual and group public speaking skills. • To develop the ability to form logical and rational arguments. • To demonstrate & improve active listening skills for interaction. • To interact effectively in small groups to complete assignments. • To successfully learn and understand the criteria for giving a successful presentation to an audience.

授業外の学習

Students are expected to complete all homework assignments and to contribute continually outside class by inputting requested submissions to the Moodle Forum Thread to facilitate active group learning. The purpose of the forum thread is two-fold: to either provide an opportunity for students to actively prepare and publish prior to class activities, or to consolidate and confirm learning after classes. All presentation multimedia is to be converted to PDF format and uploaded for assessment purposes.

所要時間: At least 180 minutes per class.
