概要

This class is to help students improve discussion and presentation skills in English, with an emphasis on American Literature. The first three weeks of the class will aim at question-and-answer, group-building activities. Students will also give one short, formal presentation during this time. The next three weeks will focus on how to discuss literature, with a focus on vocabulary and analytic techniques. In the next four weeks, students will apply these techniques in a study of several American short stories. In the last weeks of the class, students will prepare a presentation in which they analyze one short story assigned them by the instructor.

目標

Students will acquire basic skills in discussing Literature. Students will acquire basic knowledge of Literature, with a focus on the art of story-telling. Students will improve both speaking and listening skills.

授業外の学習

Students must be ready for class discussion based on handouts provided by the instructor and the short story content explained below. Students must read six short stories. English versions of all stories will be posted on the class Moodle site. The number of stories may be adjusted downward if there are time concerns. Students must take one longer Moodle quiz based on in-class lecturer input. This quiz will be approximately 35 questions long and take approximately 20 minutes. The quiz will involve both multiple choice and short answer responses. Students must study for the test by taking good notes in class and looking at handouts provided. A short practice quiz will also be available. Students must also take short Moodle quizzes based on the class readings. These quizzes will be in multiple-choice format. If the story number is adjusted due to time concerns, the number of quizzes will also be adjusted. Students should take active part in English-language group discussion. In order to do so, they must prepare for each lesson’s discussion topics. These topics will always be clarified in advance. Some of the discussions will be based on the story readings. Those readings and discussion question sheets will be provided on Moodle. Students should prepare by reading the stories and studying the questions. Work required for this will vary per student, but students should endeavor to be ready for dicussion (and quizzes) by reading well. Students must prepare for two formal presentations. These presentations may involve posting PowerPoint files on the class Moodle website. The first presentation will involve an English word definition and typically take two to three minutes of speaking. No memos are allowed. The second presentation will be to introduce an English-language short story, including presentation of plot, theme and story features. Students will select their stories from a list provided by the instructor. The length of this presentation is currently set at eight minutes but might be adjusted according to class size. Again, no memos allowed. Students must also prepare for smaller informal presentations in pairs or groups. These may involve simple PowerPoint files. These files will not be uploaded on Moodle.

所要時間: 190 minutes, but this will vary per week.
