概要

The purpose of this course is to assist students to examine current situations of education in Japan and other countries by reading books of prominent educational thinkers, such as John Dewey, Daniel Greenberg, Paulo Freire, Nel Noddings, Motoko Hani, etc. and by learning to acquire the basic perspectives of educational philosophy to question conventional wisdom. This course is also designed to assist students to reflect on their own educational experience and eventually to develop and deepen their own educational philosophy. As integrated learning, active learning, inquiry-based learning, etc. have become important keywords in the educational circle in Japan, this course will also trace their roots and examine why reforms to implement them are difficult, but worth the effort.

目標

(1) To be able to explain Dewey’s educational thought, using keywords, such as old education and new education, occupations, the map, etc. (2) To be able to explain educational thought of Greenberg, Freire, Noddings, Hani, etc., using keywords (3) To be able to explain students’ own educational thought with reference to educational thought examined in the course (4) To be able to analyze current conditions of education in Japan, etc. through the perspectives of educational thought and philosophy

授業外の学習

Before each class, students are expected to finish the reading assignments and try to answer questions that are provided beforehand on the texts. After each class, students are expected to deepen their understanding of the texts through homework, lecture, and discussion, and to be able to attain the learning objectives for the course in the forms of mid-term and final assignments. Students are expected to spend more than 190 minutes for the preparation and review of each class.
