概要

Humanity's most pressing issue is sustainability. Many changes force us to create and develop the conditions for the well-being of the planet, people, and society today. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are expected to be achieved by 2030, demonstrate that the 17 goals are about more than our planet's ecosystem because many global and local issues are interconnected. They also determine global and local cooperation for long-term sustainability. For example, how can we achieve economic growth, environmental conservation, and a inclusive society? If we deplete all resources within our lifetime, how will future generations ensure their ability to achieve what they will require? Combinations and collaborations across all academic disciplines could lead to solutions. All SPSF first-year students must take this interdisciplinary course. This lecture series begins with a review of sustainability fundamentals. Following that, professors from six different departments speak about academic discipline and sustainability in their respective fields. The lectures will then be summarized, capturing the most recent trends in sustainability. Generally, each class requires student feedback comments, known as "Reaction Papers," on its lectures and/or discussions. In pursuit of sustainable futures, the course covers the fundamentals of sustainability research and academic discipline. The course ends with preparations for further studies in the disciplines and possible actions for sustainable futures, to be considered at the THIRD YEAR SEMINAR FOR SUSTAINABLE FUTURES.

目標

The students are expected to be able to 1. Know the concepts of sustainability from a comprehensive view and various researches; 2. Express their own views towards sustainability in each discipline provided in this course; and 3. Prepare for the next step in their own study.

授業外の学習

Students must prepare for the sustainability lectures and discussions by reading the chapters and viewing the series of video URLs (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7PTbo4ZSW0 ), which are displayed on Moodle as the learning management system in Sophia. Depending on your familiarity with the relevant key ideas, this assignment takes 190 min. They are required to work on pre-assignments before each departmental class. This is also presented in Moodle and should take about 190 minutes as well. The prerequisite information and background knowledge for each class should be provided by the instructor for each session. For example, the assignment given in the first class will be in the form of an exercise. Thus, in each class, students will be asked to write comments and/or answer a quiz. (Before class) Students are expected to gather information in advance, especially on the lecture topics. For example, in the case of education, you are expected to stockpile information on the educational situation not only in your home country, but also in Japan and other countries on a daily basis. Compare your own analysis and assumptions that you can derive from this information with what will be explained in class. (After class) If you feel that your issues were not covered in the lecture, please note them in the assignment. If you are unfamiliar with the lecture topic, follow up on what is being said about it in the press and on social networking sites in Japan and abroad.
