概要

Japan rapidly developed its economy after World War 2 and is regarded as having strong soft power. This course will discuss how it has been achieved with the important keywords in Japan: the United States, pop culture, science and technology, language, nationalism and diversity. Through the exploration of these topics, students will gain unique insights into the challenges and opportunities that Japan are presented with and deepen their understanding of the society undergoing some subtle, yet possibly fundamental changes.

目標

This course explores the political and social aspects of soft power mainly in Japan and neighboring states these days. It also analyzes current issues in domestic politics and foreign relations, especially focusing on Japan-the US and Japan-Korea relations.

授業外の学習

Students will be asked to write a brief, around one-page reaction paper for each class based on discussions and to submit their articles in the next class. Writing assignments will help generate engaging thoughts or questions while reading, and will serve as the basis of class discussions and the final presentation. Original and provocative interpretations are foremost: students will be occasionally called upon to share their thoughts and be encouraged to respond to other students’ works.

所要時間: 190 minutes per week. Details are found on Moodle.
