概要
This course will have intensive discussion and debate on the challenges of mediation and peacebuilding to solve military conflicts in the world. The students will have intensive debate on the challenges and solutions of the prominent conflicts, such as ones in War in Ukraine, Conflict in Gaza, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and East Timor; they are required to read the text book, "Inclusivity in Mediation and Peacebuilding: UN, Neighboring States and Global Powers" which was published from Edward Elgar of UK in January 2022. The course will have discussions after they read each chapter: the detail is described below. (You could see the CV of the instructor by the link of "URL of Syllabus" in this page.)
目標
The purpose of the course is to encourage students to think about and exchange their views on how we can solve international conflicts; the instructor will share his experience as program director at NHK (Japan Public TV Station) who created many "NHK Special" on international conflicts, as well as academic researcher as he obtained Ph.D. in political science at University of British Columbia in Canada, specializing in peace-building. He will also share his experiences as UN Team Leader for Reconciliation and Reintegration in UN Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA), and Minister-Counsellor in the Japanese mission to the UN in charge of the issues on mediation and peacebuilding, as well as latest field research on conflicted regions, including the War in Ukraine, conflict in Gaza, and peacebuilding in South Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and East Timor.

- Debate on "Introduction (Chapter 1)" of the Text, "Inclusivity in Mediation and Peacebuilding: UN, Neighboring States and Global Powers"
- Debate on the first half of "Chapter 2 of the Text. (Theory on mediation and peacebuilding)
- Debate on the second half of Chapter 2 of the Text (UN Documents on mediation and peacebuilding)
- Debate Chapter 3 of the text (mediation and peacebuilding in South Sudan)
- Debate Chapter 4 of the text (Afghanistan)
- Debate on the humanitarian crises after the Afghan government was collapsed in August 2021
- Debate Chapter 5 of the text (Syria)
- Debate Chapter 6 of the text (Yemen)
- Debate the peacebuilding in Iraq in Chapter 7 (Iraq)
- Debate the peacebuilding in East Timor in Chapter 7 (East Timor)
- Instruction on how to write papers for political science in English countries such as USA, Canada, UK, Australia, etc.)
- Debate on the roles of Japan on mediation and peacebuilding
