Attendance points (14%) will be earned by watching the on-demand videos within the indicated deadlines. The video will be provided as AMS content in Moodle, and attendance will be determined by its activity log of the system. Participation points (36%) will be awarded for an individual's contribution to the class through Perusall by posting excellent comments. The remaining 50% will be awarded through: 1. Online mini-quizzes each time, corresponding to a chapter in the textbook(30%) 2. A final presentation (15%) 3. Active group work performance (5%) Extra points will be awarded for four assignments* (answers are optional**). *The number of assignments is subject to change. **If you want a good grade, you are encouraged to work on the assignments regardless of the outcome. The above information is subject to change depending on the number of students and other circumstances.

概要
[Notes] 1. Environmental Science is designed mainly* as an online course, i.e., a hybrid of on-demand and Zoom sessions, which comprises 1) on-demand video clips (asynchronous) for individual study and partly 2) Zoom sessions (synchronous) for introduction, presentations and if special instructions are given.** * The opportunity for fieldwork is provided on Saturday. The substitute assignment is given to students who cannot make it. **Just for data diet, participants may turn their video off, EXCEPT when instructions are given AND during break-out sessions. 2. As preparation for the first class, participants need to access Moodle page of this course by searching for the lecturer's name (Sugiura Mikiko) and enroll on their own in advance (no key code is necessary only for the first class). 3. Moodle is the primary platform of this course as a bi-directional communication method (From a lecturer: providing class contents and updating information. From students: submitting assignments and contacting a lecturer etc.). Other media will be used as instructions are given. 4. Lecture video clips are supposed to be uploaded by the beginning of each class time. 5. The key code for Moodle necessary will be given in the first class. 6. Other changes may be made as directed by Sophia University. [Contents] Environmental Science, which is a relatively new academic field as a trans-disciplinary approach toward studying the environment and environmental issues, provides us with a unique perspective for ourselves, who are dependent on the earth's ecosystems. Based on the understanding of the general framework of Environmental Science, this course is designed to provide students with opportunities to shift their frame of reference from the established but simple to multi-layered/dimensional, to see the environmental issues from a cross-cutting perspective, and to think holistically about the interaction between the natural environment and human society with a problem-solving mind. Active and interactive participation of students is expected. English proficiency is required.
目標
-Students can see the environmental issues not only from a natural scientific perspective but also from a trans-disciplinary perspective by grasping them in a big picture holistically -Students can acquire minimum ecological knowledge based on ecology, biology, social sciences, and a tip of chemistry and physics without a series of formulas. - Students can understand and explain how our life and the natural environment interact and affect each other by using the knowledge obtained in class such as a system theory.
授業外の学習
Reading materials (or other references) on Perusall/Moodle and posting comments are required. Subject to some minor changes. Check the Evaluation section carefully.
所要時間: 190min/week. See Moodle page for details
