All students will submit: 1. A PORTFOLIO of their work at the end of the term. 2. The Portfolio will include the completed art works (in the form of photos, sketches or text-based or other media) and a reflection on each task, which could also be a rational and critical reflection, or a language-based non-rational reflection, such as a poem, a song, or a story. (40%) 3. A single work of art in any medium, which they will exhibit on campus in the final week of term. (This work can be a collaborative work, or an individual work.) If collaborative, then a short essay from each member of the team must accompany the work. If individual, then there will be no need to submit an essay.

概要

This is a practice-based introduction to creative and imaginative thinking, through a series of workshop style classes in which students will make “art works” of various kinds. You do not need to be artistic to take the class. You do not need drawing or painting skills. But you do need to be willing to experiment and to collaborate with other students. There is very little “teaching” in this class. Every week we will give you an example of a form or style or genre of art and we will make an artwork in class in groups. The art could include sculpture, design, video art, dance, puppetry, installations, poetry, conceptual art, sound art, digital art, or performance. The purpose of the exercises is not to create perfect pieces of art, but to explore the creative process. How do we think creatively? How do we solve problems? How do we learn to express ideas clearly? How do we learn to deal with ambiguity? How do we think “outside the box” of our minds? (When we introduce the tasks and topics each week, the instructions will be in both English and Japanese. Students who wish to work only in English can assign themselves to ENGLISH ONLY groups, and students who prefer to work in Japanese can assign themselves to JAPANESE ONLY groups.) Because the class focuses very much on GROUP and COLLABORATIVE learning, students who are unwilling to take part in these kinds of group sessions should not take this class - the class is very active and requires you to PARTICIPATE Please note - there are three instructors for the class - John Williams (Filmmaker), Atsuko Nakamura, Visual Artist, Sculpture, Dancer, Marc Kaufmann, Writer - you can find some information about Atsuko Nakamura and John Williams in the URL below https://www.atsukonakamura.com/ https://www.icc-sophia.com/exploring-a-japanese-fishing-village-through-art

目標

The purpose of this course is to fill a gap in contemporary education. The Japanese education system is still fixated on teaching facts and on rote learning and nowadays AI allows us to answer questions at the touch of a button. It is no longer necessary to think. You just press a button, and you get an answer. But is that thinking? Some questions just don’t have very clear answers: Why are we here? How can we become happy? How do we make a fair and good society? Many contemporary philosophers and scientists question the ability of AI to think. Thinking is not just something we do in our minds, but with our bodies, our senses, and our experiences as “embodied creatures” in the physical world. Key aspects of thought are physical, external to our minds, collaborative, community-based, intuitive, or empathetic. Thinking is not simply rationality – it is a more fluid, feeling, and interesting process, that can lead us into doubt and ambiguity, where true thinking might begin. Rather than seeking answers this course seeks to generate a maze of questions, to break binary thought processes, to lead us into doubt and puzzlement, where joy might lurk. The ultimate aim of the course is to try to instill a sense of wonder into the participants in the class, a wonder at the mystery of creative processes, the complexity and beauty of the mind, the physical universe and the natural world.
