概要

Picturebooks may be easy to read, but that does not mean they are easy to study. In this class I will introduce many of the basic concepts of Picturebook Studies looking at the range of types of picturebook, the educational effects of picturebooks, picturebooks in translation, the development of picturebooks, how picturebooks can be analysed both textually and visually and, the effects of the bi- or multi-modal input of picturebooks. The majority of picturebooks used in class will be English language texts.

目標

I aim to give students a wide introduction to both understanding and analysing picturebooks. Students will be expected to learn methods of analysis and apply them to specific texts, and also to develop an understanding or the various roles which picturebooks have in society. Please note that this is a lecture course, meaning that active learning is limited. However, most classes will require a short piece of writing based on the class content. Application of lecture content to reports and research is also considered to be active learning, as is student reading and reaction to picture books. Students are always welcome to send questions or comments by e-mail, to [email protected]

授業外の学習

Background reading and research connected to course content – approximately 60 minutes. Readings or research objectives will be provided in class and through Moodle. Students will have short assignments each week as part of the class and as homework. These will usually be writing about topics from the class. Approximately 30 minutes.

所要時間: 190 minutes
