概要

The course will cover the division of Europe at the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War as well as all the processes that led to the formation of the Eastern Bloc, the implementation of the socialist political and economic system in these countries, the construction of the main structures of the Eastern Bloc (Council for Mutual Economic Assistance and Warsaw Pact Organization) and their system of functioning, processes and crises in the Eastern Bloc related to the Hungarian Revolution 1956 the Building of the Berlin Wall, the Prague Spring 1968, the Polish Crisis in the early 1980s and the Velvet Revolutions in the late 1980s to the end of the Cold war and the collapse of the Eastern Bloc. At the same time the course will trace the development of West Europe after the war with a focus on the integration processes. This includes various aspects in military, political and economic terms. The course will cover the establishment of NATO as well as the path to the creation of the European Communities, the stages through which these processes pass, internal contradictions, conflicts, challenges, etc. At the same time, the course will also trace the interaction and relations between EEC and CMEA which go through very intensive dynamics and in general the relations between the East and the West Europe during the years of the Cold War. A special focus will be made on the “détente” in East-West relations during late 60s and 70s and the so called Helsinki Process culminated with the conclusion of the Helsinki Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE).

目標

To enable the students to understand the development and explain the causes of political, economic and military division, confrontation as well as cooperation in Europe during the period of the Cold War. To help students understand the process of economic integration leading to the emergence of the EU in a historical context, define and explain the differences in the process of political, economic and military cooperation in Western and Eastern Europe before 1989. To enable the students to explain the factors influencing the development of European political, social-economic and cultural development after the WWII. To let the students demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the driving forces behind the functioning of the Western and Eastern bloc in Europe during the Cold war period as well as the East-West international relations and cooperation in Europe in the second half of the XXth century. To give students knowledge and skills to discuss and critically evaluate the dynamics of cooperation and integration in Western as well as in Eastern Europe during the Cold War period.

Required readings will be given in the detailed syllabus available on Moodle. Students will have to read the required readings for each week in order to be able to participate in class discussion. They are also strongly encouraged to supplement their mandatory readings with optional material (uploaded on Moodle) and from other sources. ●Preparation of class materials and reading assignments (60 minutes). ●Work on class assignments (60 minutes) ●Review class lecture and do quizzes (70 minutes)

  7. Soviet Bloc structures (Council for Mutual Economic Assistance and Warsaw Pact Organization).
  8. The Cold War in the Balkans.
  9. The Origins of the Integration of Western Europe - the Schuman Plan, the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the Treaty of Rome and The European Economic Community (EEC).
  10. The crises in the Eastern Bloc - Hungarian Revolution 1956, the Building of the Berlin Wall 1961, Sino-Soviet split, the Prague Spring 1968, the Polish Crisis in the early 1980s
  11. European détente in the 1960s and 1970s, the Ostpolitik of Willy Brandt, Helsinki process and the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE).
  12. The crisis of state socialism in the late 1980s and the fall of the communist regimes in Central and Easter Europe.
  13. The end of the Cold War 1984–1991, the collapse of the Soviet Bloc and the Reunification of Germany.
  14. The Aftermath of the Cold War for Europe at the end of XX th and the beginning of the XXI century.
