The class will concentrate on nine sites (out of 25) designated World Heritage sites in Japan. To begin, you will explore the universal values and historical backgrounds of each of the sites from the textbook, “Tell Me About Japan” (「英語で伝える日本の文化・観光・世界遺産 [改訂版]」2023). Acquiring this textbook is mandatory for every student. Additionally, you will gather information from various sources such as UNESCO’s website, the municipal government’s official homepage, and private organizations, sharing your findings in class. After gaining a detailed understanding of each site, you will analyze it from mass and post-mass tourism perspectives, discussing how tourism has impacted human well-being. Subsequently, you will propose some plans to promote sustainable tourism activities, providing concrete examples of how the local community can preserve these sites while maintaining the quality of life of the local community. You are asked to give a 20-minute presentation (the length may vary depending on the class size) on one of the sites where you create a discussion question and answer it with creative ideas. This will be followed by a discussion session where you will lead the class as the master of the ceremonies. The presentation and discussion activity will start in the sixth week.
