This semester, we will focus on his most celebrated piece of writing in the West: The Narrow Road to the Deep North (Oku no Hosomichi). Through reading Bashō in his own words (albeit translated into English), you improve your academic English skills by discussing, interpreting, and writing haiku. This semester, we will work on a travelogue project to help you imagine what life was like for Bashō as he traveled and wrote his away around Japan.

授業外の学習
Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. シラバスの内容や教科書資料をもとに,授業の予習・復習をしていただきます。 レッスンに関連した宿題が毎週出されます。 As in the spring semester, you will be expected to read three to four pages for homework each week. These readings may seem difficult, but we work to understand them together through a variety of activities in class. Each week, we will discuss part of Bashō’s journey to the northeast and the haiku that he wrote along the way. This course will be especially interesting for those who are interested in how language, culture, and history interact and shape each other.
