Through reading Bashō in his own words (albeit translated into English), you will deepen your understanding of haiku, as well as many relevant differences and similarities between Japanese and English. In addition, engaging with Bashō’s writings in translation will offer many opportunities for you to improve your academic English skills. You will also join in the spirit of dialogue through haiku by writing several such poems yourself! In fact, you will write many haiku over the course of the semester, and present a selection of them twice during the semester.

授業外の学習

Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. シラバスの内容や教科書資料をもとに,授業の予習・復習をしていただきます。 レッスンに関連した宿題が毎週出されます。 You will be expected to read around three pages for homework each week. These readings may seem difficult, but we work to understand them together through a variety of activities in class. Each week, we will discuss part of Bashō’s journey around Japan and the haiku that he wrote along the way. This course will be especially interesting for those who are interested in how language, culture, and history interact with each other.
