Evaluation will be based on active class participation, weekly homework assignments, regular attendance, reaction papers, and an ongoing cultural research project. There will be no formal examinations, but there will be a final research project paper and presentations at the end of the term.

概要
Students will be able to study academic subjects in a structured way at an undergraduate level. A CLIL approach will be employed so that students can learn the basic knowledge of the subject and the specialist language used in the subject in English. この科目群では,アカデミックな科目を体系的に英語で学びます。内容言語統合型学習(CLIL)を用い,科目の基本的な内容やその分野で使用される専門用語,学問分野を英語で身につける方法について学びます。 On this course, you will learn about how culture is defined as an academic subject. Drawing on some topics related to cultures, this introductory course provides an accessible and engaging introduction to the study of cultures in different contexts. このコースは文化とは何かを学問的に定義し,関連トピックをわかりやすい英語で紹介する入門コースです。 The focus of this course will be on topics in cultural studies and cultural research projects. Students enrolling in this course should have a strong interest in other cultures and if possible, have experience living, studying, or traveling abroad. This course will focus on a comparative cultural analysis of Japan and other countries, and a look into the deeper aspects of various cultures around the world through an ongoing cultural research project. The cultural research project will include research, interviews, progress reports, and final presentations. There will be weekly reading assignments and students are expected to come to class fully prepared to actively participate in group discussions. This course will focus on discussion, reading, and critical thinking skills. There will be extensive reading homework on cultural topics. Students enrolling in this course should be confident of their ability to do academic work in English.
目標
The main course objectives are to have a deeper understanding of cultural studies, improve intercultural communication skills, develop greater confidence when interacting across cultures, and discuss and analyze a variety of cultural topics about Japanese culture and cultures around the world. Part of the course will focus on interpreting and explaining Japanese culture to people from other cultures and part of the course will focus on researching aspects of other cultures. Developing greater curiosity about other cultures as well as greater cultural self- awareness are important aspects of the course. The topics in the spring and fall semesters will be different.
授業外の学習
Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. シラバスの内容や教科書資料をもとに,授業の予習・復習をしていただきます。 レッスンに関連した宿題が毎週出されます。 There will be weekly reading assignments on cultural topics as well as regular ongoing research required for the cultural research project.
