Drawing on some literary works, this introductory course provides an accessible and engaging introduction to the study of different texts written in English or translations of literary works in English. このコースはアカデミックな観点から文学とは何かを定義し,様々な英語の文学作品や翻訳作品をわかりやすく紹介する入門コースです。 On this course, students will come to appreciate Haruki Murakami as an important Japanese writer of the modern period. Haruki Murakami is a writer who is able to blend both Japanese and Western popular cultures, and who might well be thought of as a global writer. We shall read one of his works in English and discuss our reactions to his writings, thinking particularly about how he blends both Japanese and Western mythologies and styles. To aid us with the readings, we will also learn some basic vocabulary for discussing literature and some techniques that can be used to appreciate literary texts. In addition to the lectures, we will have time to do readings and hold discussions about the impact of Western culture upon Murakami and his texts.
