INTRODUCTION TO ENGLISH LINGUISTICS

概要

This course is an introduction to the systematic study of the most widely used language of the world—English. The primary goal of the course is to bring you to reflect critically on the English language which is usually taken for granted by its native speakers, but which poses great challenges to those who try to learn it as a second/foreign language. In this course, we will focus on various aspects of the English language from pronunciation to syntax and language acquisition. Unlike most EFL or ESL courses, the content learning of the course will be as important as the language being used to teach it, that is, English. We will, therefore, aim at getting “two for one,” that is, learning both contents and the language at the same time, thereby enhancing the learning of both. In particular, there will be many hands-on tasks for students to work on in class based on the class readings and lectures. Students’ active participation in class, therefore, will be crucial for the success of the course.
