概要
Since its foundation, Sophia University has held at the core of its teaching the ideals based on Christian humanism. The University has strived to foster the spirit of “For Others, With Others” that is, to live in harmony with others, to serve others, and to take innovative roles in bettering society. We aim to nurture the students who seriously engage in self-improvement, value interactions with others, are equipped with ethical thinking and judgment, open to transcendental values, have a global outlook, and capable of contributing to build a more humane world. For cultivating the unique perspectives to realize such educational goals the university established “Studies in Christian Humanism” as university identity courses. They are compulsory for first year students of all departments as required general studies courses. This course is designed for students who have interest in the philosophical understanding of religious language. The main question of this course is ‘how language can be a medium to convey one’s experience about the sacred?’ To answer this main question, this course will use narratives on religious experience written by spiritual authors as its models. Learning from these models, student will learn how to acknowledge the spiritual depth of their life’s experience and how to express them using religious terminologies.
目標
At the end of this course, students will be expected to develop understanding and sensitivity toward their own religious experiences. They will also be expected to show appreciation toward the religious language of different religious traditions and to develop their own skills in speaking and writing using religious language.
授業外の学習
The course will mainly be in-class lecture. However, students are expected to do the reading assignment for each class and to submit two pages paper of their reading assignment before each class. This paper will serve as their basis to participate in the class discussion. The reading assignment materials for each class will be distributed in the previous week.
