概要
Since its foundation, Sophia University has held at the core of its teaching the ideals based on Christian humanism. The University has strived to foster the spirit of “Men and Women for Others, with Others” that is, to live in harmony with others, to serve others, and to take innovative roles in bettering society. We aim to nurture the students who seriously engage in self-improvement, value interactions with others, are equipped with ethical thinking and judgment, open to transcendental values, have a global outlook, and capable of contributing to build a more humane world. For cultivating the unique perspectives to realize such educational goals the university established “Studies in Christian Humanism” as university identity courses. They are compulsory for first year students I all departments as required general studies courses “The unexamined life is not worth living”. Believing that these words of Socrates are true for people of every age and culture, this course provides an opportunity to reflect on the most basic question of human existence. The course is constructed around three topics: the problem of good an evil, of freedom and the meaning of life and death. After introducing each question, we study and discuss some of the answers given by philosophers of different ages and backgrounds.
