中世ヨーロッパ研究

概要

This course is an introduction to the history and culture of the long period in the Western history known as the Middle Ages (from roughly 300 to 1500 AD). We will explore political, religious, and social changes as well as economic, technological, and cultural developments in order to understand the complexity of medieval Europe. Students will learn from a combination of lectures and readings of primary sources in English translation. It corresponds to the curriculum policy of faculty number 4.

目標

After successfully completing the course, the students will be able to understand the major milestones in the evolution of Western civilization from Late Antiquity to the Renaissance, evaluate the influence of medieval political, religious, social, philosophic, and economic norms and practices on the formation of a Western culture, and assess the central role of religion at all levels of medieval society
