概要

This course aims to develop students’ critical thinking skills through reading texts in the field of Asian American history. Students will read various articles that discuss issues of race, gender, sexuality, migration, family, and labor. This course helps students to identify the authors’ arguments and critically investigate how their arguments are supported by evidence. Students will also learn how to engage in discussions based on texts.

目標

This course has the following objectives: - To develop critical thinking ability through reading skills - To analyze and evaluate authors’ arguments - To clearly communicate your ideas based on texts

授業外の学習

(1) Weekly reading comments (300 words): Every week, students are required to read the assigned text and submit their comments before the class. In the comments, students should 1) state the author’s main argument in your own words, 2) explain one or two key evidence the author uses to support their arguments, and 3) elaborate your thoughts and questions on the reading. (2) Discussion leading: Each student takes at least one turn as a discussion leader during the semester. Basically, discussion leaders should develop their reading comments as a short presentation. They should 1) summarize the reading's arguments, 2) offer three discussion questions, and 3) facilitate class discussions. (3) Final review (1000 words): As a final paper, students write a short review on three texts we have read throughout the semester. In the review, students should discuss 1) an overarching theme that strongly ties the three texts they selected, 2) how each text argues and contributes to the theme, and 3) your critique of these texts, pointing out areas in need of further research. In short, students should carefully put the readings in conversation with each other and deeply discuss the specific theme.

所要時間: 190 minutes per class
