概要

In this course we will read and interpret the fairy tales of the brothers Grimm. Fairy tales are of interest to us because of the sheer extent of the historical and geographical dispersal of (folk) tales that are analogous to these tales. We will use Bettelheim's "Uses of Enchantment" as a guide to understand some of the basic Freudian concepts such as id, ego, superego and Oedipal Complex.

目標

The purpose of this course is to enjoy reading tales and also to learn psychoanalytical readings of the stories which represent the fundamental desires and anxieties experienced in the process of maturing. Fairy tales such as "Little Redcape," "Jack and the Beanstalk" or "Snow White" will be analysed.

授業外の学習

Please download the excerpts from Moodle. (They include some selected fairy tales and also criticisms such as by Bettelheim). Students are expected to PRINT OUT all these and bring them to class. Before each class, please read the story of the topic and its interpretation.
