SEMINAR(NORTH AMERICAN HISTORY)1

概要

This is a research seminar that prepares students with readings and discussions on the scope and methods of research in North American History with a focus on material culture as a possible resource of primary sources. Through discussions on readings in theory, methodology and various pieces of past scholarship, students are expected to begin working on their own research projects so that every student may be able to make a short presentation on their topic by the end of the semester. This year, we will read chapters from Cynthia Enloe's classic work, entitled Bananas, Beaches and Bases: Making Feminist Sense of International Politics, Second Edition (University of California Press, 2014) on the relations among gender politics, beauty, international politics and imperialism. In addition, we are aiming to continue the third year of the student-joint seminar project that explores the history of the Department of English Studies. 歴史学研究の方法論として,文献資料に加え,人間の手と知が施されたあらゆるモノ(Material Culture)を研究対象とする方法論を学びます。春学期は方法論を中心に理論と実践の先行研究を読みます。秋学期は各自テーマを選び,資料収集,プレゼンテーション,クラス討議を経てアカデミック・ペーパー(ゼミ論や卒論)を仕上げます。今年は まずSturkenの歴史記憶についての研究論文を取り上げた後,Cynthis Enloeの古典の2014年改訂版の研究を読み,ジェンダー,国際政治,帝国主義との関係についての考察を深めます。ディスカッション中心に進めます。これに並行して,ゼミの学生共同プロジェクトとして,2022年度より始まった英語学科の歴史研究プロジェクトの３年目の研究を継続発展させ,まとめたいと考えています。 We will use Moodle as the main platform.

目標

1. Learn the fundamentals of Material Culture Studies. Learn the fundamentals of the scope and method of research in North American History studies. 2. Students will seek their own research fields and topics of interest. 3. Students will write a 3000-word academic paper on their own research topic, as a preparation for their future graduation theses. １．モノを資料に加えるアメリカ史研究方法論(マテリアル・カルチャー)の基礎を学ぶ。北米地域の歴史学研究の基礎を学ぶ。 2．各自の研究テーマを探る。

授業外の学習

Reading, research (100 minutes), writing drafts and presentation preparations (90 minutes) are required. Writing scheduling will be planned under the direction of the instructor.
