概要

The goal of this course is to examine the influence of culture and social structure on human thought, emotion, social development, and social behavior. Particular emphasis will be placed on studies that have attempted to extend the boundaries of psychology beyond its current, predominantly North American, limits. Topics to be covered include: conceptions of the self across cultures; cultural differences in motivation and social development; cross-cultural methodology. Students will be encouraged to think of the cultural meaning systems and practices central to understanding higher-level mental processes, as well as how these mental processes in turn are important in constraining, reproducing, and transforming the cultural system. Active learning will be incorporated by adopting small group discussions, pair-work, and reaction papers.

目標

Goals of Cultural Psychology: To understand the interactive effects between people (behavior and thought) and their culture. To ultimately contribute to a more inclusive understanding of human psychology. To increase understanding of other cultures to prevent, minimize, or resolve cross-cultural conflict To foster the development of culturally competent individuals.
