概要

This course examines the history of American women from the colonial era to the Civil War. With a focus on the social categories of gender and race, the course considers the fundamental theories of women's history including the Republican Motherhood and the separate sphere ideology. Special emphasis will be given to women's experiences in the society. The spring course examines the experiences of White middle-class women in the Northeast but several cases of the experiences of African-American women and Native-American women are also considered. Each class consists of lecture, presentation and discussion based on readings of scholarly monographs and primary sources.

目標

The objective of this course is to stimulate students' critical thinking skills by examining and discussing the selection of sources and methodology of each topic assigned every week.

授業外の学習

Students are required to study 190 minutes outside of class to prepare and review classes by skimming through assigned readings and responding to class presentation and discussions. For each class, students are expected to read the assigned readings before coming to class (100 minutes) and review the topic, develop their own question and make a critical analysis after class (90 minutes).
