概要
This is a continuation of a practice-based seminar for students interested in reading and analyzing works of Contemporary American Literature and working on an extended piece of creative writing in English or researching and writing critically in English about the creative process of American writers and artists. Creative projects can include writing either Fiction (short stories or a novel), Non-fiction (essays or memoir), Plays, or a collection of Poetry. During the class, we will explore how writers find and develop their 'voice' on the page, the choices writers make when constructing their work, and the techniques writers use to tell their stories. Students will be asked to study the work of American writers and artists to locate and present models for practice and inspiration. Additionally, a core part of the seminar will be to examine/analyze the work of contemporary North American writers of the last half-century who came as immigrants, for whom English was not their first language, but later wrote and published their work in the language. (For example, the Bosnian writer, Aleksandar Hemon, the Chinese writer, Yiyun Li, the Hatian writer, Edwidge Danticat, and others.) For all the writing produced in the seminar, we will organize and proceed in the workshop tradition. Meaning, we will closely read each other's work, help one another develop and shape ideas, and create a community of critical and creative partnership.
