概要

This class introduces students to the work of two new and two established women film directors. We will watch four films during class time and discuss the films in depth, looking at the social and political background to the films, which all deal in some way with "minorities", including sexual and ethnic minorities.

目標

The aim of the class is to encourage students to watch more interesting and varied kinds of cinema from different countries and different filmmakers with different perspectives (not just the usual boring, white American filmmakers who make films about boys with guns and big planes) and to question the assumptions behind mainstream cinema. Why are so many films about guns and planes and male power? Why don't we have more female protagonists and more minority points of view?

授業外の学習

Students will have to watch about 60 to 90 minutes of films or other material outside class every week. There will not be much written work at first. Most of the work will be guided viewing with questions. Students will have to write a mid-term and a final paper. (about 1,500 words each)
