SEMINAR (DISCOURSE ANALYSIS) 2

概要

This is a methodology focused course aimed at developing skills in analyzing spoken, written, and embodied discourse. In this course we will focus on the linguistic connections between saying things, doing things, and identity. The content of what we will be studying will range from examinations of the language used by language learners inside and outside of the classroom as well as the language of popular media such as movies, TV shows, and social media/SNS. Students will take turns presenting book chapters and articles on different aspects of discourse analysis. They will also do their own discourse studies and present them at the end of the semester.

目標

In this course students will: -learn how to analyze various forms of discourse ranging from spoken to mediated. -become familiar with basic approaches to discourse in humanities and social sciences research. -learn how to distinguish surface and hidden discourses relating to social ideologies and structures. -develop English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills.

授業外の学習

Students will be expected to do all readings before class (technological assistance will be allowed for those who have difficulty reading longer passages in English). Students will be expected to come up with discussion questions that help to broaden everyone's understanding of the topic. Everyone will be expected to do some form of research project for the course which will vary depending on the students' long term education and work goals.
