SOCIOLINGUISTICS 1

概要

In this course students will learn about several areas of research relating to language use in society using the concept of gender as an example. In addition to several readings and discussions, students will conduct a small research project related to one of the topics covered in class. Applying the techniques covered in the course to other topics such as race, class, or age will also be covered. *This course will combine one or more methods from Moodle, YouTube and others. I suggest that all students should have their own computers and access to fast internet.

目標

Students should be able to conduct a sociolinguistic research project based on existing research and be able to share the results of their research as both a short paper and as presentations. Students should also be able to connect information in the readings with their own knowledge in both small and large discussions.

授業外の学習

Students will be expected to do an extensive amount of reading and research as well as collecting data for their research projects outside of class. At least 2 hours of work outside of class is expected.
