(1) After the final exam, a report needs to be submitted with an analysis of your own performance at the final exam. 概要
This course focuses on "Japanese to English" interpreting skills. Students listen to Japanese conversation or discussion, and interpret it into English. Although this course is for students who want to practice interpreting into Japanese, those who want to learn how to speak English professionally are also welcome. このコースは,「英語から日本語へ」の通訳技術を習得することにフォーカスします。日本語の会話や議論を聞いて,それを日本語に訳す練習を行います。通訳技能を練習したい人と共に,英語のスピーキング力を高めたい人も歓迎します。 Students will interpret easier sentences and ordinary topics, and gradually move to a little more complicated sentences and tougher topics on political and economic issues. This way, students can learn something basic first, and then build on it to move on to a little more challenging one. まずは,簡単な文や日常のトピックや内容を使って英語から日本語に通訳する練習から入り,徐々に複雑な文や内容が濃いトピックを扱います。最後には,政治・経済のトピックで出てくるような内容が通訳できるように練習します。徐々にレベルを上げてゆく方法を採りますので,安心して受講できます。 Interpreting techniques to learn: 英語から日本語への通訳技法として学べるものとしては: (1) How to prepare for interpreting work: Making a list of technical terms 専門用語のリスト作り―これは特に馴染みのないトピックでは絶対です。 (2) How to interpret Japanese sentences and render them into English. ① Not matching the grammatical structures of Japanese and English is OK. 日本語の文構造をそのまま英語に置き換えなくてOK。 ② You can break a Japanese sentences into several English sentences 日本語の一文を,数文の英語で訳してもOKです。 (3) How to simultaneously interpret Japanese into English 英日同時通訳の方法 ① You don’t wait until a sentence is complete. You start interpreting a semantic unite of a sentence into an English sentence even if a sentence is not complete. 文が終わるまで待たずに,英語に訳し始める。 一つの日本文をいくつかの短い英文に訳す How to conduct a class meeting: クラスの進め方 (1) Review Japanese technical terms 日本語の専門用語の英語訳を前もって確認しておきます。 これはプロの通訳者であっても行う必要な準備作業です。 (2) Listen and interpret Japanese conversation or discussion into English 日本語の会話・議論を英語に通訳してみる。 (3) A couple of students demonstrate his/her interpreting It really doesn't matter whether they can do it well or not . 数人の参加者が当てられて,英語の訳を披露する。 できてもできなくとも,気にしなくていいですよ。 (4) The lecturer comments on students' performance in terms of semantics, nuance as well as grammar. Some example translations are presented. 講師から,意味,ニュアンス,文法などについてコメントした後で, 具体的な通訳例を共有します。 Generally a session will be 80% for interpreting practice and 20% for theory and background information. 80%が実践練習,20%が講義,背景知識の説明です。 At the final examination, you are expected to interpret some or all the materials that have been studied in class sessions. 期末試験は,基本的にクラスで扱った内容を通訳する試験になります。
目標
The course objectives include: (1) First Objective: to be able to have a good preparation for an interpreting job 第一の到達目標:通訳の仕事のための準備ができる (2) Second Objective: to be able to interpret sentences of easier concepts into English; 第二の到達目標:簡単な内容の日本語を英語に訳せる (3) Third Objective: to be able to interpret on ordinary economic and political issues into English; 第三の到達目標:常識的な経済・政治のトピックを日英通訳できる
授業外の学習
(1) Weekly preparation may take about about one hour. Preparation for a session is recommended. For example, making a list of terms relevant to the speech to interpret. 毎週1 時間前後の準備が必要です。 通訳するスピーチの単語リストを作って覚えておくなどもその一つです。 (2) Reviewing what was learned in the previous class is more important, and may take another one hour. 前のクラスで学んだことを復習することが大事です。 それにもきちんとやるとすると２時間ぐらいはかかるでしょう。

- Week 1 Outline The lecturer will explain the whole schedule of the class, and how the class will be conducted. He will also show what are expected of the participants and how to obtain the copies of the course materials. Interpreting practice will start on Day 1. Be ready. Participation on Day 1 is necessary for all the registered students. クラスのスケジュール,内容,授業のやり方などを説明します。 クラスで使う通訳材料の入手方法もお伝えします。 Week 1から,一文単位で日本語から英語への通訳を後半に行います。 そのつもりでいらしてください。

- Week 4 Multiple-sentence interpreting for explanation in ordinary business communication Enthymeme and PREP structures and others 日本語の複数の文を聞いて英語に通訳する練習を行います。 社会人になると仕事でよく出てくる「説明する場面」での通訳練習です。 ①メッセージを伝えたら,それを説明するという形の形式で説明します。 また,PREPなどもその一つのタイプです。
- Week 5 Multiple-sentence interpreting for persuasion in ordinary business communication "Yes-but" structure and others 日本語の複数の文を聞いて英語に通訳する練習を行います。 社会人になると仕事でよく出てくる「人を説得する場面」での通訳練習です。 ①説得には主に「Yes..., but...」の譲歩構造を使うことが多いので慣れましょう
- Week 6 Multiple-sentence interpreting for feedback and challenging in ordinary business communication ”Feedback structure and sensitive language” 日本語の複数の文を聞いて英語に通訳する練習を行います。 社会人になると仕事でよく出てくる「相手に耳の痛いことを言って 改善してもらう場面」での通訳練習です。 ①説得には主に「いい点から入って,その後で改善指摘をする」形が 英語では普通です。また,単語のよっては非難しているニュアンスが 入ってしまいますので語句選択も重要になります。
- Week 7 Interpreting of discussion 1 on socio-economic issues ⓪A relevant list of terms to be reviewed ①Introduction of participants and opening statements on wages and economic growth ディスカッションの通訳です ⓪今日訳す内容で使われる語句リストをレビューします。 ①参加者の紹介と経営者団体からの意見を通訳します。 まずは,賃上げと景気についての意見です。

- Week 14 Final Examination -Interpreting with audio and video materials that have been covered in this course and record the performance for a subsequent report 期末試験 ー今まで通訳した箇所を通訳する。 それを録音して,最終レポートの分析資料とする。

①Audio and video sources are used. 日本語の音声・映像を使います。 ②Texts are shared when necessary. テキストが必要な場合には,配布します。 ③There is a book in the reference section below. We may use some parts of it. You do not have to purchase a copy, but you might want to get one through Amazon. It is a very good book. 参考文献として挙げた本の内容を使うことがありますので, 必要と思えばAmazonで購入ください。いい本ですよ。
