INTERCULTURAL INTERACTION 1

概要

In this course we will examine the relationship between language and intercultural communication. Through the analysis of samples of "real" English discourse we will deal with issues such as politeness, power, topic and face. Students will be required to read between 10 and 20 pages of English for homework each week and to participate actively in online discussions. At the end of the semester, students will also be required to analyse a short piece of interactional data and complete a short exam in class.

At the end of this course students should have gained: 1) an understanding of the basic mechanisms of communication and the type of linguistic, sociolinguistic and sociocultural elements that can cause miscommunication 2) an awareness of some of the social forces, including prejudice, that also hamper communication 3) an awareness of some of the different theoretical approaches and debates surrounding intercultural interaction 4) some experience in analysing actual communication, leading to the development of self-reflection

1) Weekly English reading (10-20 pages) and written homework questions to be handed in. 2) Weekly online lectures. 3) Analysis of interaction data. 4) Preparation for short in-class exam.
