概要

This seminar focuses on British imperialism from the 17th century to the 21st century, including the slave trade, colonialism (in the Americas and Asia), the East India Company, British travellers and explorers, and decolonization. Possible topics might include: - The Atlantic slave trade - Christianity and slavery - Gender, feminism, sexuality (e.g. imperial masculinity) - Ideas of Japan in British travel writing - British relations with China during the 19th century - British food and its connection with empire - Victorian adventure stories set in Africa - The James Bond films and British identity - The British monarchy and the Commonwealth - The impact of Brexit (e.g. British immigration policy) This class is open to students who want to write a sotsuron, OR to students who want to carry out an independent research project (1-2 semesters), under my guidance. Classes are based around reading, discussion, and short presentations by students. Classes will be conducted in English. You don’t need to have perfect English or perfect grades to apply. I aim to create a friendly environment in which everyone has the confidence and opportunity to express their ideas. During the semester, we will meet for regular small-group face-to-face classes. Usually, I will ask you to read a short essay, poem, or short story, which we will discuss together. We will also use the classes to discuss research techniques, such as using online resources and structuring an argument.

1. Carry out independent research and deepen your understanding of the topic you have chosen, culminating in an essay or "sotsuron" thesis. 2. Improve your general knowledge of British history and culture. 3. Improve your self-confidence in speaking and writing advanced English. 4. Improve your research and presentation skills.

Participants will be expected to: 1) Carry out an independent research project during the semester, with close guidance from me, and write a final paper. 2) Read a short piece of written work before discussion classes. 3) Give 1-2 in-class presentations on their research during the semester.
