概要

This course explores the lives and experiences of ‘Nikkeijin’ (Japanese emigrants and their descendants) in the Asia-Pacific region during and after the war. We are particularly looking at war experiences/memories of Japanese overseas communities in the West Coast of the United States, Hawai‘i, Australia, and the Philippines and Japan. Through discussions on various themes including racial discrimination, multi-ethnic communities and identity, this course provides you with a profound knowledge of the history, society, culture, and identity of Nikkeijin. The students are required to read a short text on the related topic before every class, and also to write one paragraph to conclude what they have learned at the end of each class. The instructor will give students a feedback to each assignment. Students are asked to attend a zoom lecture every week, which takes about 60 minutes (including group discussions) followed by a Q and A session and paragraph writing. However, those who miss the lecture will be able to see the recording for a week via moodle. All the information (including the one on the first class) will be given via moodle, loyola and class ML. *Students are not required to take "History of Japanese Immigration 1" to register this course. *Students are required to attend the first class. If not, please email the instructor (miijima*sophia.ac.jp. Replace "*" with @)
