概要
Recently, research has challenged our ideas and assumptions about non-human animals, and what separates us from them. This course examines the complex, contradictory, and often controversial nature of the human-animal relationship primarily from a philosophical perspective through readings, articles, and documentaries. A textbook is required (see below). We will study non-human animals in a variety of contexts and roles (e.g., as food, entertainment, companions, scientific subjects). This class will consider questions such as whether, and to what extent, we owe other animals moral consideration. Active learning is a central feature of this course, experienced through discussions, group work, presentations, and reflection papers; as a result of these activities, critical thinking skills will also be cultivated.
