概要
"The 5-minute linguist" is a collection of bite-sized essays on language and linguistics. Phrases such as "5-minute" and "bite-sized" suggest that the essays are short, non-technical, and friendly. That's very TRUE. I hope students get familiarized with various friendly aspects of linguistics and connect your everyday language experiences to this course. This course is independent from "The Sounds and Varieties of Languages 1 (FES65700)" in other semesters. Though we will be using the same textbook, there is no overlap of the material and chapters are quite self-standing.
目標
This course is intended to develop the following 4 skills: 1. To find the main point of short academic essays. 2. To analyze the supporting details of the main point. 3. To criticize and evaluate the argument in the essay. 4. To extend and connect the argument to your academic endeavors.
授業外の学習
Students are expected to read assigned 2 essays in the textbook and write comments on the class wiki site BEFORE each class. Two essays (midterm and final) are required about the topic you choose from any of the chapters covered in this semester.
