AMERICAN THEATER AND FILM*

概要

This course is designed to explore the unfolding relationship between theater and film. Since the appearence of motion pictures in the late 1890s, each artistic practice has undergone a series of wide ranging developments. Many of these changes have resulted from a complex interdynamic between the two. Through a variety of writings (plays, theoretical and historical writings) as well as specific filmic texts, we will investigate the specificity of each artistic practice as well as their similarities and shared heritage at various historical conjunctures. The problem of adaptation from the stage to screen will be developed along the broadest possible parameters, not simply in terms of the "work" itself but vis-a-vis acting styles and various technical categories such as lighting. Lectures, screenings, readings, discussions and a final essay required.

目標

Students are expected to gain a sense of each topic not simply as a body of agreed knowledge but as a site of continuing debate and discussion. They will look at the various approaches which have been adopted in relation to the study of American theater and film.

Students are expected to analyze reading assignments on the course syllabus which will be distributed on the first day of the class.
