概要

The purpose of the course is to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills in teaching English as a foreign language that any in-service teacher has to possess prior to embarking on teaching at junior and senior high school in Japan. The topics to be covered ranges from theoretical issues (e.g., ‘understanding learners,’ ‘understanding teachers,’ ‘managing the classroom,’ ‘describing language’) to practical issues (e.g. ‘how to teach four skills,’ 'how to deal with problem classes,' etc). An emphasis will be placed on understanding the basic principles underlying a range of teaching techniques than acquring the superficial knowledge about a range of teaching techniques. During the class, students will be expected not only to attend the lecture, but to get involved in group discussion, to complete a given task and deliver a short presentation. The course is also intended to help students to practice reading English texts which include a number of terms, which are specific to the domain of teaching a foreign language. 英語科教育法Iはこれから英語教員になろうとする人のためのコースです。リーディングやスピーキングなど4技能の指導技術を身につけるだけではなく,外国語教育指導法の背景にある理論や研究の成果などの習得を目指します。授業は,講義,課題,グループ討論,プレゼンテーションなど様々な形態を通して進めます。本コースでは,英語で書かれた専門書を読むことができるようになることも重要な目的の一つとします。

目標

The acquisition of essential basic knowledge and skills that all language teachers have to possess 外国語としての英語担当教員として必ず知らなければならない基本的な知識,技能および背景にある理論理解し習得すること。 1)To understand the meaning of metalanguage (e.g. vowels, consonants, intonation, adjective, the infinitive, coherence, speech act, etc.) and to be able to give examples for each of the metalinguistic terms 英語教員に必要とされる基本的な言語に関する専門用語(母音,子音,イントネーション,形容詞,不定詞,結束性,発話行為,等)を理解し例示できる。 2) To understand the main current as well as traditional theories, approaches, practices and activities in English Language Teaching. 伝統的な指導法のみならず,最新の教授法の基本原理について理解する。 3) To understand how best to implement the approaches, practices and activities in the classroom.さまざまな指導法,教授法を使って,学習者の言語習得を促すためにはどのようにすればよいのか,運用方法を理解する。 4) To be able to work with the key concepts and instructional methods in micro-teaching sessions during the course. 英語教育に関する基本的な概念,指導法,教授法を,授業中のタスク等を通して実践する。

授業外の学習

Students are expected to do the following before and after each session: 1)Read the chapter of the textbook to be covered in each session and work out the task as well. 各週で扱う章について教科書を読んで理解し,課題も合わせて行う。 2)Examine the copies of the textbooks for Junior and Senior High school. 中学校,高等学校で使用されている教科書の調査 3)Examine the Course of Study produced by the Japanse Ministry of Education. 学習指導要領の理解

  2. Understanding learner factors 学習者を知る: 1) How to deal with Individual differences of students in motivation, ages, learning styles. 2) The importance of understanding the needs of learners
  3. Understanding teacher factors 教員の仕事,教員に必要とされる資質,技能,知識: 1) What are the qualities of good teachers 2) What teaching skills and strategies teachers are expected to use in the classroom
  4. Classroom management 授業運営: 1) How to ask questions, give instructions 2) The importance of striking a balance between teacher talk time and students talk time Is it allowed to use the students' L1? How to arrange seats How to use the blackboard effectively.
  5. Basic principles of learning and teaching English in the classroom 英語の学習と指導の仕組み: 1) Characteristics of teacher talk 2) Should students' errors be corrected?, etc..
  6. Understanding the structures of language教員に必要な英語の構造に関する知識を身につける: 1) The importance of acquiring the knowledge about language 2) Pronunciation (consonants, vowels) Parts of speech The structure of words The structure of texts
  7. Teaching the system and structure of English 体系としての英語を教えるにはどうすればよいのか: 1) Teaching grammar 2) Teaching vocabulary 3) Teaching text structures 4) Teaching pronunciation
  8. Teaching four skills (1) 4技能の指導と理論(1): 1) How to teach reading and writing 2) How to teach written language with the combination of spoken language
  9. Teaching four skills (2) 4技能の指導と理論(2): 1) How to teach speaking and listening 2) How to teach spoken language with the combination of written language [Mid-term exam scheduled around this week. Details will be announced in due time.]
  10. Teaching English using a textbook 教科書の使い方: 1) Learning how to adapt textbooks 2) How to prepare support materials
  11. Planning a lesson 指導案の作成 1) What should a goold lesson plan look like? 2) The content and organisation of a good lesson plan 3) How to use a lesson plan in the classroom
  12. Language assessment 達成度の評価: 1) Understanding basic principles of language testing, program evaluation, etc. 2) How to assess students' achievement
