BRITISH PHILOSOPHY AND POLITICAL THEORY

概要

This course seeks to introduce students to some of the major thinkers and key intellectual trends in British philosophy and political theory from the 17th century up to the early 20th century. It examines the historical contexts in which different political and philosophical ideas developed in Britain, with a focus on the underlying connections between economic, moral, and social concerns that are evident in the articulations of such ideas in the main strands of British political thought. Overall, this course seeks to provide students with a broad overview of the ways in which British philosophy and political theory developed in response to specific social, historical, and economic forces, in addition to being shaped by particular religious and intellectual trends. An active learning approach will be employed (combined with introductory lectures), with an emphasis on classroom activities such as group discussion and debate, collaborative worksheets, and critical writing exercises.

To further develop your critical thinking, conceptual analysis, and discussion skills, with a focus on improving your capacity to express your ideas and opinions in English. 3. To improve your comprehension and use of academic English, particularly the terminology and modes of expression and argumentation employed in philosophy and political theory. 4. To cultivate your analytical and argumentative skills, particularly the ability to engage with specific ideas more deeply through an understanding of the relevant social and historical context. 5. To improve your English listening and writing skills, as well as your ability to read, comprehend, and engage with academic texts in English.

General Overview -> Complete the readings and discussion activities assigned for each class (Generally, you will be required to read around 10-15 pages each week, usually from academic articles on different aspects of British philosophy, political theory, and intellectual history). Review the relevant course material each week to prepare for class debates and group discussion. Complete homework assignments, including reaction papers, Moodle forum tasks, and critical or reflective writing exercises (further details will be provided by the instructor). Detailed Instructions -> The weekly class preparation and review activities described above should be structured as follows: 1. Class Preparation: Complete the readings and discussion preview activities assigned for each class (based on worksheet instructions; approx. 120 minutes per session). 2. Class Review and Homework: Complete homework assignments, including critical and reflective writing exercises (reaction papers), independent research and self-review related to the class topics, and Moodle forum discussion tasks (based on Moodle instructions; approx. 70 minutes per session, with 45 minutes for homework tasks and 25 minutes for review tasks).
