概要

This course examines the key concepts of American culture and society by reading and discussing the excerpts from the autobiographies of notable American men who contributed to the making of American history. Presentation and active participation in class discussions are expected. アメリカ合衆国の文化や社会に歴史的な足跡を残した人物の自叙伝や伝記の抜粋を読みます。英文速読力と歴史的背景やアメリカ文化についての基礎知識と批判的分析力の修得に力を入れます。毎回プレゼンとクラスディスカッションを行います。授業受講前に毎週の課題reading を行い,reading questionに対するresponse paragraph をアップすること。初回の授業で先着順でプレゼン希望者の募集を行います。各回二人ずつ。学生プレゼンは一人10分程度を目安にご準備ください。プレゼン担当者はクラスのフィードバックを読み,プレゼンについてＡ4 1枚程度のreflection essay (your own argument placed in the historical context and a reflection on class feedback)を学期末試験日に教室で書いてもらいます。プレゼン希望者が集中した場合は抽選もしくは話し合いで調整します。 *初回の授業でmoodleのキーを提供する。 We will use Moodle as main platform of this course where the readings and the reading responses will be uploaded.

目標

1. polishing critical reading and discussion skills 2. acquiring basic knowledge on the formation of American values through historical perspectives 毎週,人物の自叙伝の抜粋を読むことを通して,英文の速読力を伸ばし,北米研究の基礎となるアメリカ合衆国の価値観やその変遷の基礎知識を修得する。

授業外の学習

Students are required to write a one-paragraph response to the reading question posted on the moodle before attending the class. Students are expected to make presentations on one of the figures. (subject to change according to the size of the class) 毎週,予習として課題文献を速読し,moodle上に掲示されたdiscussion questionにあらかじめ授業前に回答してから授業に臨む。(100分)授業後に,講義を復習し,プレゼンに対してフィードバックを行い,課題の自叙伝を読むための独自の論点を考え,歴史的文脈に位置付けて分析を深める(90分)。
